The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a man who allegedly travelled all the way from Anambra State to Oyo State to carry out a revenge killing over his brother's death.

The suspect was intercepted by operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol during a stop-and-search operation along Ife Road while travelling in a commercial bus.

Police Public Relations Officer for Oyo State, DSP Ayanlade Olushola Olayinka, confirmed the arrest in a statement to Vanguard. According to him, police recovered a pistol and a cartridge from the suspect during the search.

HOW HE WAS CAUGHT

Operatives on Safer Highway duty were conducting a routine stop-and-search along Ife Road when they stopped a commercial bus. During the search, they discovered a cut-to-size pistol and a cartridge in the suspect's possession.

That discovery led to his immediate arrest. Further questioning, police said, revealed his mission.

"He came all the way from Anambra to avenge the death of his father and brother," DSP Olayinka said.

"The operatives of the Safer Highway, while on a stop-and-search along Ife Road, intercepted a commercial bus and while searching, they discovered a cut-to-size pistol and cache. Further questioning revealed that he had travelled all the way from Anambra State to carry out a revenge killing."

The suspect was identified by other reports as Kingsley Odoh.

HIS OWN STORY  IN HIS OWN WORDS

In a video of the police interrogation obtained by Vanguard, the suspect gave his own account of why he embarked on the journey.

He said he was working in Benue State when he received news that his brother, who was schooling in Awka, Anambra State, had been killed inside the school.

"I was working in Benue State. My brother was in school in Oka. I had information that he just died in the school. That somebody killed him in the school."[Awka]

He said he returned home after the news, but tragedy struck again a few weeks later:

"A few weeks after my brother died, my mother also died."

According to his statement, he vowed during his brother's burial to avenge his death. He said the brother himself was also a cultist, and that he had received information last month that the person he believed was responsible for the killing was now living in the Southwest.

"Last month, I had information that the boy is living in a state, Yoruba State. I said I will find out that place where he is living."

Police said he was on his way to confront that person when he was arrested.

GUN BOUGHT FOR ₦20,000  AND CULT LINK

When asked where he got the firearm, the suspect told police:

"I bought it from my friend. I don't know, maybe he's a hunter."

He said he bought the cut-to-size pistol for ₦20,000.

He also admitted during questioning that he belongs to the Vikings confraternity when asked about cult membership.

DSP Olayinka said the suspect is currently undergoing investigation.

"All thanks to God and the good effort of the men of the Safer Highway. He was intercepted, arrested and he is currently undergoing investigation."

Police said the arrest foiled what could have been another cult-related revenge killing in Oyo State, a state that has in recent years been a hotspot for confraternity clashes.

The case will be transferred for further investigation and prosecution.

This is not just one man's revenge mission. It is a reminder of how cult violence in Nigeria has become a cycle:

A brother is killed in Awka. The family loses a mother weeks later. The surviving brother joins a cult, buys a gun for ₦20,000, and travels across states to kill again.

If police had not stopped that bus on Ife Road, another family would have been mourning today.

Revenge does not bring back the dead. It only creates more graves.
